Did the TDP score a self goal by boycotting the ZPTC and MPTC election in Andhra Pradesh? In fact, in its 40 years of existence, the TDP has never boycotted any election. Even during the YSR regime, it contested the elections. But, for the first ever time, it has opted out of the elections.
Clearly, many in the party are not happy with the decision. Senior leader Ashok Gajapathi Raju has boycotted the TDP meeting and his daughter Aditi Gajapathi Raju has announced that the Gajapathi family will put up candidates for the elections. Another senior leader Jyothula Nehru has resigned from the party position in protest. Senior leader Atchen Naidu, who is the working president of the party and former minister Ayyanna Patrudu too have reportedly expressed their disappointment at the boycott. They all feel that the boycott will only strengthen the YSRCP further. The TDP will be seen as a party that ran away from facing the electorate, they argue.
This running away from elections could actually lead to loss of morale on the part of the party workers. This could pave way for mass resignations from the party at the grassroots level. At this rate, the party would be in a serious crisis by the next assembly elections.
