The topic of granting special status to Andhra Pradesh arose when Telangana was carved out of combined Andhra Pradesh. It's been close to eight years since the bifurcation was done. However, no quality work has been done yet by the Centre in this matter. The Union government which has been ruling out the possibility of special status on every possible occasion has done it yet again.
In Rajya Sabha, the Union Government once again said that there is no possibility of granting Special Category Status (SCS) to Andhra Pradesh. Giving a reason to this, the Centre said, in the place of special status, a special financial package was already granted to the state.
Centre gave the shocking reply to a question raised by YSRCP Rajya Sabha member V Vijay Sai Reddy. Raising the question, the ruling party legislator asked if Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy made a request for the special status or not.
In a written reply, Union minister of state for finance Pankaj Chowdary said that the special status cannot be granted for Andhra Pradesh as the special package was granted already. He made the comments when the YSRCP Rajya Sabha member asked why the special status was not being implemented.
When V Vijay Sai Reddy asked the Union government to give information on the reasons that are resulting in not granting the special status for the state that was guaranteed by the then Union Cabinet in 2014, the Union Minister gave his version.
As a reason for not granting the special category status for Andhra Pradesh, Union minister of state for finance Pankaj Chowdary said that a special financial package was granted for the state already and for the same reason, the special status will not be granted.
Announcing that the Union Government is ready to help the state and implement the promises that were made during the bifurcation of the state, the Union Minister said, the special package was granted already and asked why the requests are made for the special status.
It has to be noted that, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier promised to grant special category for Andhra Pradesh on multiple occasions. Quite contrary to that, the Centre made its decision clear that the special status cannot be granted.
