TRS Strategy To Delay Municipal Elections

Update: 2021-02-05 04:22 GMT
Stung by successive defeats in both Dubbak and the GHMC elections, the TRS government in Telangana is planning to defer the elections to seven corporations and three municipalities. This is being done in view of the rising tide of resentment against the TRS governance. The TRS is planning to bring these local bodies under the rule of special officers for at least few months to ensure that the anti-TRS sentiment wanes.

If sources are to be released, the reservation of the constituencies and preparation of the voters list would be further delayed. Thus with the term of these civic bodies ending, they would pass into the control of the special officers. Using these special officers, the TRS government will create favourable mood among the people. It will also get some respite and can focus first on the Graduates Constituency elections. After that, it can work on the civic bodies and try to turn the mood of anti-incumbency in these areas.

The elections would be held for the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation, Khammam municipal corporation, Achampet, Siddipet, Jadcherla, Nakrekal and Kothur municipalities. Of these the last three have recently been upgraded to municipalities from major gram panchayats. The TRS wants to win as many local bodies as possible and hence is it is trying to delay the elections.
