Just 238 'voters' for the all-important Congress presidential elections
238... that's right. Just 238 persons from Telangana will decide who will be the next president of the Congress Party. The state has just 238 voters who are eligible to vote for the presidential elections of the party. A polling centre is being set up at the Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad to enable them to exercise their franchise. There would be two voters from each of the 119 assembly constituencies in Telangana.
The polling is being held from 10 am on October 17 and will end at 5 pm. While MP Rajmohan Unnithan is the returning officer, Raj Baghel is the assistant returning officer. Senior party leaders and former minister Shabbir Ali and former MP Mallu Ravi are the polling agents for Mallikarjun Kharge, who has the support of Sonia Gandhi.
The other candidate Shashi Tharoor does not have any senior backing him. Young workers such as Kummari Srikanth and Santosh Kumar Rudra, who belong to the professionals' cell of the party are his polling agents. The 'voters' of Telangana are likely to overwhelmingly vote for the official candidate Mallikarjun Kharge.
Every senior leader, including TPCC chief Revanth Reddy did not meet Shashi Tharoor when he came to Hyderabad to seek votes. However, every leader was in attendance when Mallikarjun Kharge came to campaign in the state. The results of the election would be announced on October 19. Some of the 'voters' are busy campaigning in Munugode. So, some of them might at least abscond from voting.
