River Ganga receives High Court Notice

Update: 2017-04-30 12:40 GMT
A month ago, Uttarakhand High Court announced River Ganga as a Living Entity. And now, The Top Court even issued a notice to the sacred River.

Petitioner Swarup Singh Pundir, who is the Khadak Maf village head, moved High Court against the decision of Uttarakhand Government to set up a garbage dump at a land portion in Rishikesh where the river flows on both sides. He argued that this move would pollute the river even more. He also opined such a development would ruin the clean Ganga mission taken up by the Central Government.

Accepting the petition, High Court Bench served notices for all the respondents including river Ganga. This is for the first time a river was served legal notice. Notices were issued for Uttarakhand Government, State & Central Pollution Control Boards and Rishikesh Nagar Palika as well.
