Vehicles Older Than 15 Years To Be Sent To Scrap: Centre!

Air Pollution is one of the biggest concerns for us. A few Indian cities made it to the list of most polluted cities. The Indian government is working on this these days. Alternative energy is backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party. EVs are also being pushed and the Union government is aiming to make use of clean energy as an alternative to fuel.

Now the Indian government has taken another big decision to beat air pollution. A notification has been issued by the government which says that vehicles that are older than 15 years will be sent to scrap. The new rule will be effective from April 1, 2023.

The vehicles belonging to the Central government, state governments, and corporations would be scrapped after 15 years. The registrations of these vehicles would also be canceled. A few months back the Union government asked the state governments for a response and the governments allegedly approved.

However, scrapping the old vehicles is restricted to just government and corporation vehicles, and private vehicles were not included in this. The private vehicles would be in large numbers compared to the government and corporation vehicles.

If the private vehicles would also been included in this, then the majority of old vehicles would be sent to scrap. No one knows why private vehicles were excluded from this. The vehicles should go through a fitness test and if they fail then they should be sent for scrap.

The rule which was made mandatory in the previous budget says that the personal vehicles would get a fitness certificate after 20 years of registration to see if it is in a good condition or not. The time for commercial and government vehicles was fixed for just 15 years.

Announcing that the old vehicles should be scrapped, the Union government mentioned the Motor Vehicles (Registration and Functions of Vehicle Scrapping Facility) Rules, 2021 in the notification that has been released by the Ministry.

"Disposal of such vehicles shall, after the expiry of the fifteen years from the date of the initial registration of the vehicle, (should) be ensured through the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility set up in accordance with the Motor Vehicles (Registration and Functions of Vehicle Scrapping Facility) Rules, 2021," the notification says.
