Brutal rape and murder of Hyderabad-based Doctor Disha led to a nationwide debate. This heinous crime had raised the heat in the Parliament as well. Opposition MPs raised the Women Safety issue in the floor of the House. While Congress MPs Uttam Kumar Reddy, Revanth Reddy and Trinamool MP Sougath Roy expressed their concern in Lok Sabha, Jaya Bachchan spoke about the dire situation in Rajya Sabha.

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu approved the resolution moved by Opposition MPs on the crimes against children and women in the country. The Vice President opined, 'There will be no use in changing the existing laws...The mindset of people has to change! State Governments and Politicians need to be prepared to take tough decisions to prevent rapes from happening. Department need to have the efficiency to handle the situation at the earliest whenever there is information about any threat to Women. Rapes have become a societal disease. Men need to change the way they look at children and women'.

Venkaiah Naidu objected the practice of allowing convicts in heinous crimes to seek mercy. He stressed the need for change in the Judicial System for creating a better society. Venkaiah supported the appeal to set up more fast-track courts to deal with cases of sexual assault but objected permission for the convicts to appeal against the sentence again & again.
