Vijayawada Metro Hits Roadblock Before Birth

The Vijayawada Metro Rail project is facing roadblocks in its inception stage.The proposed metro rail in Vijayawada serve the purpose of better transport connectivity in the city but some People in the city seem to have reservations over the project.

The project is facing resistance from land owners even before the project was launched. Some of the land owners in Nidamanuru on the outskirts of Vijayawada took to the streets to protest against the acquisition of lands for Metro Project.

The government is yet to acquire lands for the project. Sensing the trouble the land owners set up an anti-land acquisition forum to intensify agitations against Metro project.The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Revenue officials recently conducted a joint survey of land required for the Metro rail project in the city.

DMRC has already invited tenders for constructing Metro rail corridors in the city. According to sources, Tata, Nagarjuna Constructions, Afcons and URC are some companies that have evinced interest in taking up the project. The bids are expected to be opened in the first week of December. It will cost Rs. 6,823 crore for constructing a 26-km network. The project is expected to completed by 2018 if all goes as planned.
