In a significant indication that it is hell bent on privatizing the Vizag Steel Plant, the Modi government has clearly pointed out that there would be no rethink whatsoever on the question of privatizing the Vizag Steel Plant. It said that privatization of the VSP is a certainty.
In a written reply to a question raised by the MPs from Andhra Pradesh on the issue, Union Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman said that the Center is determined to privatize the public sector undertaking. She said the Central Government has already discussed the issue with the state government. She further said that there was literally no role for the state government in the affairs of the VSP as there is no equity from the State Government.
Interestingly, the Central Government has claimed that there would be greater investment capital inflow if the plant is privatized. It has also claimed that the job opportunities, both direct and indirect, are sure to grow after the privatization of the VSP. She said this would be for the betterment of the state.
It may be recalled that the employees unions of the VSP are already waging an agitation opposing the disinvestment. They allege that the privatization move was aimed at turning the VSP lands into real estate and thus benefit the capitalists. The political parties and the civil society organizations too are opposing the privatization move.
