NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant told Water will decide the future elections in the country. 'Effective Water Management is the need of the hour. Governments which fail to manage water will loose elections, Those who succeed in providing water to the people will survive. Water is very critical resource, whether for improving quality of life or economic growth,' he said.
Amitabh Kant points out lack of any regulation in Northern India (Delhi, Punjab and Haryana in particular) led to over-exploitation of water in the past 10 years. He cautions these states were slowly turning into deserts.
As per statistics, India accounts for 17 percent of World's Population but it has just 4 percent of the fresh water resources. While 84 percent of water is being used for Irrigation, Industrial & Domestic usage is merely 12 percent and 4 percent respectively
