Why is Telangana government showering sops on Singareni

Update: 2021-10-06 04:11 GMT
If it's election time, then expect bonanza from the Telangana government. The Government has showered poll-bound Huzurabad assembly constituency with largess unbound. Starting from Dalit Bandhu to pension scheme, there are sops and sops on Huzurabad voters.  But, there is another constituency where the government is raining sops.  The 'constituency' in question is  the Singareni collieries.

With elections for the recognised union in Singareni Collieries round the corner, CM KCR has announced a bonus of 29 per cent for Singareni employees. Usually, the bonus is given during the Diwali, but this time around, the bonus is being given ahead of Dasara. Sources say that this is being done with an eye on the union elections, which has become a matter of prestige for the ruling party.  The Opposition is making a spirited attempt to defeat the TRS-backed union in the elections. Hence this decision, say sources.

KCR, who held a meeting on the coal belt on Tuesday at Pragathi Bhavan, also responded to minister Koppula Eswar to hike the pension amount of the retired employees of Singareni. He asked the officials to submit a detailed report to him at the earliest.

Unions like the AITUC, CITU and BMS have upped the ante with mass contact programmes among the employees. They have launched yatras and outreach programmes. The union elections are important for the political parties because the results reflect the mood of the coal belt, which includes some 20 assembly constituencies in the North Telangana region. Interestingly, the TRS did not perform as expected in the municipal elections of the coal belt in 2019. Hence, the TRS wants to prove its strength this time.
