With the Municipal corporation polls round the corner, politics is gathering heat in Khammam city. All the major political parties have begun the spade work for the elections, the notifications of which could be issued by December-end or mid-January.
While Congress and the TRS are the traditional contenders for the top slot, a weakening Left and a resurgent BJP are also preparing to enter the fray. The parties are working hard to build organizational networks and are chalking out agitational programmes to capture the imagination of the voters. The ruling TRS is bringing to the fore promises like setting up of a new police commissionerate and an IT hub. The party is also promising the setting up of Rythu Vedikas. In the last elections, the TRS had won 34 of the 50 divisions and got its nominee elected as the mayor. The election is being managed by Minister Puvvada Ajay.
On the other hand, the BjP is trying to prove itself by an aggressive campaign. The party is planning to choose young and educated leaders as its candidates. It is planning unleash a GHMC like campaign blitzkrieg. Sources said leaders like Bandi Sanjay will camp in Khammam city for the campaign. In the last GHMC elections, the BjP could contest in only 11 seats and retained its security deposit only in one seat. But this time around, it is hoping to wrest the corporation from the TRS.
The once powerful Left is now looking to retain some relevance in Khammam. The Congress too has been considerably weakened in the town. Another key feature of the Khammam elections is that the number of divisions has been increased to 60 from 50.
