March 2018 issue of Mathrubhumi Grihalakshmi Magazine featured Model Jilu Joseph, who is unmarried, as the Mother breastfeeding a baby. The photograph was captured when the model's breast was stuffed into the mouth of the child.
Advocate Vinod Mathew moved Judicial Magistrate Court in Kollam against the publishers and the model. Another Advocate Jiyas Jamal complained to the State Child Rights Commission saying baby's health and rights were exploited by the Publishers. The complainants alleged such an attempt is meant for commercializing motherhood and breastfeeding. They felt tricking the baby that the model is its mom and she can offer milk is an insult to our society.
However, The Kerala High Court turned down the plea to categorize the breastfeeding cover as obscene. Bench comprising of Chief Justice Antony Dominic and Justice Dama Seshadri Naidu opined, 'Neither we are able to see obscenity in the picture nor vulgarity in the caption. We looked at the breastfeeding picture with the same eyes we had seen Artist Raja Ravi Varma's picture. Beauty lies in the beholder's eye and so is obscenity'.
