A day after taking charge as Defence Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman has taken a big step towards breaking gender barriers in the armed forces. Indian Army took the call to induct 800 women in the force in first phase.
Since 1992, Women are allowed only in select areas in the Indian Military such as Medical. But, The situation is going to change from now onwards.
Nirmala Sitharaman is the first full-time woman Defence Minister of India. Indira Gandhi was the only other woman to hold this crucial portfolio.
Soon after taking charge, Nirmala Sitharaman gave her consent for financial assistance offered to retired military personnel through Raksha Mantri Ex-Servicemen Fund (RMEWF). She claims Military Preparedness, Welfare of Armed Forces & their Families are her priorities. She promises to address all long-pending issues by holding consultation with PM and the Union Cabinet. 'I will be Defence Minister 24*7,' she said while assuming the office.
