Yogi - First Indian To Win Election In Japan!

Puranik Yogendra who's nickname is 'Yogi' emerged as the first ethnic Indian to contest and win an election in Japan.

The 41-Year-Old contested in the council elections. He got elected to the Edogawa Ward Assembly in Tokyo by securing 6,477 votes. The number of votes received by Yogi is fifth highest of the 226,561 valid ones cast in the April 21st election.

More than 34,000 Indians has been living in Japan. Edogawa Ward has the highest number (4,300) of Indian-origin People among Tokyo's 23 Wards. This accounts to more than 10 percent of the total living in Japan.

Mr.Yogendra went to Japan in the year 1997. He came back to India in 1999 and visited Japan again in 2001 to work as an engineer. Since 2005, He has been a resident of Edogawa Ward. Post 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami, Yogi has done everything to help the victims along with his friends in the Edogawa Ward. This social service was life-changing for this Indian and he decided to become a Japanese. 'Want to be an Assemblyman who could connect with everyone irrespective of age and nationality. I wish to be like a bridge between Japanese and Foreigners,' he told.
