The degree of income tax frauds that have been happening in the recent past involving fake accounts is beyond measure. Now it has reached a point where people have started to trap victims using fake refunds claims of upto Rs 1.5 lakh.
A recent report by highlighted a shocking income tax refund scam where a taxpayer lost Rs 1.5 lakh after responding to a fake refund message. The fraud began with a message claiming that the person’s income tax refund was delayed and required immediate action. The message included a link that looked official and convincing.
When the taxpayer clicked the link, it redirected to a fake website designed to look like the government portal. The victim was asked to enter sensitive details such as PAN number, bank information, and one time passwords. Once these details were shared, the scammers quickly accessed the bank account and withdrew money.
The Income Tax Department has warned citizens that it does not send refund links through random messages or ask for confidential details like passwords, OTPs, or bank information over SMS or email. Officials have urged taxpayers to stay alert, especially during the refund season when many people are expecting money.
To stay safe, always type the official income tax website address directly into your browser instead of clicking on links. Never share OTPs or banking details with anyone. If you receive a suspicious message, report it immediately and verify refund status only through the official portal.
