The President of United States generally has the most secure and safe operational procedures for any global leader in the world currently. But we often see cases of assassination attempts even on United States presidents and similar scenario is being observed now.
A Pakistani businessman has been convicted in the United States for plotting to assassinate top American political leaders, including former President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump.
The verdict was delivered by a federal jury in Brooklyn after investigators uncovered an alleged international assassination conspiracy.
The accused, identified as Asif Merchant, was found guilty of terrorism related charges and murder for hire. According to US prosecutors, he travelled to the United States and attempted to hire contract killers to carry out the assassination of a senior American political figure during the 2024 presidential election period.
Investigators revealed that Merchant offered around 5,000 dollars in cash to individuals he believed were hired assassins. However, those individuals were actually undercover FBI agents, which allowed authorities to foil the plot before any attack could take place.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that the plan was linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and was allegedly part of a retaliation plan following the 2020 killing of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani by the United States.
Merchant claimed in court that he acted under pressure and that his family was threatened, but the jury rejected his defence after reviewing the evidence.
With the conviction now confirmed, the Pakistani businessman faces the possibility of life imprisonment under US federal law. The case has drawn global attention as it highlights concerns over foreign linked plots targeting American political leaders.
