One of the biggest cybersecurity incidents in cryptocurrency history has hit Binance, one of the world's leading cryptocurrency exchanges. According to Forbes, the company said an estimated $6.3 billion worth of crypto assets were impacted in the incident, which could potentially rank among the largest cryptocurrency hacks on record.

According to Binance's preliminary investigation, attackers may have gained access to the company's systems through a compromised laptop belonging to a software engineer. The attackers allegedly used that access to initiate unauthorized cryptocurrency withdrawals.

Binance said it had found no evidence that any wallet private keys were leaked. The company also confirmed that it had worked with blockchain partners to freeze approximately $3 billion worth of affected assets.

As an immediate security measure, Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while carrying out security checks. The company said it would cover all customer losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and other company funds.

The estimated impact of $6.3 billion is equivalent to roughly ₹57,000 crore, depending on the exchange rate. However, it is important to note that this figure represents the estimated value of assets affected by the incident, not a confirmed amount stolen.

There have also been claims linking the incident to North Korean hackers. However, Binance has not officially confirmed the identity or nationality of the attackers. The company said it is working with law enforcement agencies and blockchain intelligence partners to identify those responsible and recover the affected assets.

Binance has promised to release an updated Proof of Reserves after completing its security and recovery measures.
