A journey around the world by flight may take weeks or months, but British adventurer Karl Bushby has spent nearly 28 years walking across continents to complete an extraordinary global expedition.

The 57-year-old former British Army paratrooper began his journey in November 1998 from Punta Arenas, Chile. After travelling approximately 50,000 kilometres across four continents and 30 countries, he is now completing the final stages of his journey towards his hometown of Hull, England.

Bushby, who served in the British Army for 12 years, decided to undertake this challenge because of his fascination with maps and long-distance travel.

He established two strict rules for his expedition: he would not use any motorized transport, and he would not return home until the entire journey was completed on foot.

One of the most dangerous moments came in 2006 when he crossed the frozen Bering Strait from Alaska to Russia. Later, geopolitical tensions and visa restrictions disrupted his planned route. He eventually swam more than 160 miles across the Caspian Sea to reach Azerbaijan.

Carrying a handcart loaded with essential survival equipment, Bushby continued despite extreme weather, difficult terrain and numerous obstacles.

Originally planned as a 12-year expedition, the journey stretched to almost three decades. His incredible adventure is a powerful example of human endurance, determination and the courage to pursue an extraordinary dream.
