The much-awaited Lok Sabha elections are underway. The buzz around the elections is quite high this time as the fight between the ruling BJP and the opposition is expected to be intense. Both sides are working hard for their respective goals and to achieve them.

The BJP which pulled off two wins in 2014 and 2019 wants to score a hattrick. Not just a win, BJP is pushing for 400 seats which is a big target. On the other hand, the grand old Congress is putting all the efforts to stop the BJP. It is in alliance with other parties to form a strong force.

As the Congress party has been becoming weak with every election over the past few years, the focus went on to Congress's performance starting from the first Lok Sabha elections. There were ups and downs for the Congress in terms of seats and vote percentage.

In the 1951 Lok Sabha elections, the first polls after the country’s independence, Congress scripted history with the most number of seats with 364 seats. Congress managed to get 44.99 percent. Despite the vote percentage going down, Congress won more seats in 1957. Cut to 1962, Congress recorded 44.72 percent votes and won 361 seats. In the next elections, Congress was restricted to 283 seats.

Congress had a memorable win in 1984 seats as it dominated the elections with 404 seats. This is the only time that a party won 400 or more seats. However, the conditions were favourable for Congress as the elections came after the assassination of Indira Gandhi.
