The Press has a big role to play in a democracy to be the voice of the voiceless. The importance of the media is such that it is called the Fourth Estate after the executive, legislative, and judiciary. However, the reality of press freedom is very concerning in the country.

India’s rank in the press freedom index has been coming down rapidly which is very concerning. The ruling parties taking action against particular outlets can be seen as an example of this. In one such example, the cable operators in Andhra Pradesh took a harsh decision.

The Andhra Pradesh Cable TV Operators Association said four channels would be blocked and they would be off air. The issue created a big uproar. The issue reached the High Court and it made key comments. In the verdict, the Delhi High Court said that the channels should be restored.

This can be seen as a big relief to the channels. The Court gave orders for the restoration. It is said that the Cable operator's body took the decision under pressure from the new government. The opposition YCP is saying the same and asked how it can be done.

Days after the change in government the decision was taken raising many eyeballs. It is said that the stand of these channels might be the reason behind taking the decision.

On the other hand, people say that this is not the first time a government has done this. They are citing the example of the decision taken by the previous YCP government to ban a few channels. From Chief Minister Jagan to Ministers everyone openly targeted a few channels in the last term.

Considering both incidents one thing is confirmed the government targets the media houses that support the other side which is not a good thing.
