Every hour and again, there is some sort of relationship status, but get carried on with the younger generation of the population and completely ruins their morals. Recently, it was the situationship agreement which tarnished the relationships and now, it’s this new term called friendflation.
Rising prices are no longer affecting only household budgets but are now reshaping the social lives of young people, giving rise to what many are calling “friendflation.” Across cities, youth are finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with the cost of socialising as expenses such as restaurant bills, movie tickets, café outings, fuel and weekend plans continue to climb.
For many, meeting friends has become a financial decision rather than a spontaneous activity. Young professionals and students admit that they often avoid social invitations or limit outings due to budget constraints. Some feel uncomfortable explaining their financial situation, which in turn affects friendships and social bonding. As a result, several youngsters are quietly withdrawing from group plans to manage expenses.
Experts say this shift reflects a larger economic pressure on the younger generation, especially those dealing with education loans, rent and daily living costs. However, they also note that friendships need not suffer if people adapt to changing realities. Many are now opting for low cost alternatives such as meeting at home, cooking together, spending time in public parks or choosing free or affordable activities.
These changes indicate a growing awareness about financial responsibility among youth. While inflation continues to challenge lifestyles, young people are learning to balance social connections with practical money management, redefining how friendships survive in a high cost environment.
