On one hand, the vast major majority of the Indian educated population has been settling down in the United States, and United Kingdom for better social standards and living condition. And now it is being established that the Indian passport is losing its value and credibility in the international medium.

The latest developments are suggesting that the passport of India has slipped from 124th position in 2025 to 125th position in 2026. This is a significant letdown to the country which has been imposing strong immigration policies for the last few years.

After being at 124th in 2025, India has slipped to 125th, with visa-free access to only 26 destinations while the MEA website lists 27 trailing countries such as the Philippines, Morocco, Uzbekistan and Namibia as per the Global Passport Index 2026.

It is extremely shocking to see that the value of the Indian passport is steadily losing momentum, and it is not being valued at all at the global level. As little as five countries are allowing visa free travel to Indian Indians, which is a big negative for a country with such a huge democracy.

At this rate, it is becoming increasingly tough to travel to 1st world countries like the United States and United Kingdom, while holding the Indian passport, which has been steadily losing the credibility.

It must be noted that even Thailand had cancelled visa on arrival facility for Indian travellers, just this month, which is another shocking aspect here.

Better law and order maintenance with enhanced passport scrutiny could develop the ranking subsequently, and it has to be seen how the Indian government would deal with the same.
