Media reports say that the Karnataka government is looking at imposing 2 percent cess on movie tickets and OTT subscriptions.. The move is said to be aimed at lending a helping hand to cine and cultural activists.
There will be a dedicated fund to this and the money would be used to help the activists. It is said that the cess amount might be revised later. The work is underway to frame the guidelines and start a procedure of collecting the cess.
If the bill gets effective then the OTT subscribers in the state would have to pay slightly a higher price for the services than earlier. Bangalore has the image of having one of the costliest ticket fares. With the cess the amount goes up further.
Bodies which are dedicated to plays and other art forms would get a benefit from the move and the funds would be used for their betterment. This will help the Nataka Sangams which are going through a rough patch.
A board will be constituted to look into this and the members of the body will have members from various departments. They will work on how to collect the cess and use the funds properly, reports say.
