A Hyderabadi man had a very bitter experience while commuting to the United States as he was sent back from Abu Dhabi despite having all the necessary documentation for his travel to the U.S.
A Hyderabad based IT professional holding a valid US H1B visa faced an unexpected ordeal while travelling to the United States, triggering concern among Indian tech workers.
The incident occurred at the US Customs and Border Protection clearance facility in Abu Dhabi, where the traveller was stopped and denied permission to board the onward flight to the US, despite clearing all checks at Hyderabad airport.
According to reports, the individual had a valid H1B visa stamp in the passport and carried the latest I 797 approval notice after recently changing employers.
However, during questioning at Abu Dhabi, US officials reportedly focused on the mismatch between the visa stamp, which mentioned the old employer, and the new approval notice. They also asked detailed questions about job role, work location and salary slips.
Even though the visa stamp was still valid for several months and was not cancelled or marked, officials insisted that the traveller obtain a fresh visa stamping reflecting the current employer before entering the US. As a result, the person was asked to collect luggage and return to India on the next available flight.
The incident has sparked anxiety among H1B holders, especially those who have changed employers, highlighting the uncertainty and strict scrutiny at preclearance points even when documentation appears complete.
