India has fallen below the average fertility rate for the first time and its history, and it has already become a headline. But there is more to it than what meets the eye and let us have a look into the same.
The Total Fertility Rate estimates the average number of children a woman would have over her lifetime if current age-specific birth rates remained constant.
A replacement-level fertility rate of approximately 2.1 is the long-term average generally needed to maintain a stable population in a country without migration.
But the point to be noted, here is that India’s estimated rate of 1.9 is therefore below that benchmark. This does not mean India’s population is about to decline immediately.
But that does not mean, the population of India is going to be falling drastically at this point in time. India’s population is expected to continue increasing for years because of population momentum.
Large generations born during earlier decades are now reaching or remaining within childbearing ages. Even if every generation has fewer children than the one before it, the total number of births can remain high while the population ages gradually.
