The Government of India has taken a major step by banning gambling and betting platforms, making it clear that these activities cannot be treated as gaming. Gaming is about skill, creativity, and entertainment, while gambling and betting often cause financial losses, addiction, and social problems.
The new Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 has been passed in the Lok Sabha. It bans all forms of real-money online gaming, including betting apps, fantasy sports, online poker, rummy, and digital lotteries. The government stated that such platforms were misleading people, especially the youth, by promoting gambling in the name of online games.
As per the law, anyone running or advertising these platforms can face up to three years in jail and fines of up to ₹1 crore. Repeat offenders may face stricter punishments.
This move is being seen as a historic decision to protect citizens from the harmful effects of online betting. It also helps promote healthy gaming culture, where the focus is on skill and enjoyment, not financial risk.
