One of the most famous incident in Indian airlines industry happened some three months ago, and this was primarily due to the poor operations by Indigo airlines. And now, something sudden has happened with regard to the same.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers has resigned from his position following the airline’s major operational crisis that caused thousands of flight cancellations and severe disruption to passengers across India. The resignation was announced on March 10, 2026, with the airline stating that Elbers stepped down citing personal reason.
The move comes months after IndiGo faced one of the biggest operational breakdowns in Indian aviation in December 2025.
During the crisis, the airline was forced to cancel nearly 4,500 flights over a span of about ten days, leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded at airports across the country. The chaos triggered public outrage and heavy criticism from regulators and the government.
The disruption reportedly occurred after the airline failed to properly adjust flight schedules to comply with new pilot duty and rest regulations introduced by India’s aviation authorities. As a result, crew shortages and scheduling issues severely affected operations.
Following the crisis, aviation regulators investigated the matter and imposed penalties on the airline while placing it under stricter operational monitoring.
After Elbers’ exit, IndiGo co founder and managing director Rahul Bhatia will temporarily oversee the airline’s management until a new chief executive officer is appointed.
Elbers had led IndiGo since 2022 and oversaw major expansion plans, including large aircraft orders and international route growth.
