The Kerala actress rape case took an interesting turn after the non guilty judgment on actor Dileep. But the rest of the culprits have been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment at a larger capacity.

A Kerala court has awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment to all six men convicted in the 2017 abduction and sexual assault of a Malayalam actress. The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court found them guilty of gang rape, conspiracy, kidnapping and unlawful confinement.

Their individual sentences will run concurrently, and the period they already spent in jail will be counted. The court also directed them to pay fines and ordered a compensation of five lakh rupees to the survivor.

The six men, including Pulsar Suni, were proven to have executed the assault inside a moving vehicle, an incident that created massive outrage across Kerala and the film industry.

This sentencing comes shortly after actor Dileep was acquitted in the same case due to lack of conclusive evidence, a decision that triggered debate on accountability and influence in high profile crimes.

Public response to the verdict has been divided. Some believe the punishment brings a degree of justice, while the survivor’s lawyers argue that 20 years is the minimum penalty for the crime and not strong enough considering the brutality involved.

They have hinted at the possibility of filing an appeal for stricter punishment. The case remains one of the most widely discussed crime incidents in Kerala’s recent history.
