Don’t Know Local Language? Your Licence May Get Cancelled?
Generally, several states across India face these problems with local language infusion, and this creates a problematic situation all over.
Generally, several states across India face these problems with local language infusion, and this creates a problematic situation all over. Maharashtra government is doing something similar as they have taken a pretty big decision with regard to Marathi language imposition.
The latest decision taken by the Maharashtra government is that auto drivers could be losing their license if they do not learn Marathi language and can convert in the same.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers who fail a functional Marathi language test after August 16 could face cancellation of their operating licences.
The government has given drivers until August 15 to learn practical Marathi and has deployed around 450 teachers to conduct training sessions across the state.
What this would essentially mean that every taxi driver in the state must know Marathi language for functional reasons, and should be able to interact with the customer in Marathi. If they do not learn the language by August 15, there is a chance that their Auto license could be cancelled by the authorities.
This has immediately resulted in negative reaction on social media as people are commenting that it is not right to impose a language on the public. They are pointing out that there are several other states across India, which also function with people from different language and backgrounds.
It must be parallel kept in mind that Maharashtra is one of the states that has a high cultural significance for their home language of Marathi. The same is reflecting in the decision taken by the Maharashtra government now.
