They signed up to learn how to slice, bake, and sauté — not to run for their lives. What was supposed to be an enriching Easter holiday camp turned into a nightmare in Singapore, where a fire broke out at a premium cooking school that charges ₹43,000 per week. The blaze didn’t just destroy parts of the building — it shattered the calm of a community and raised tough questions about child safety behind elite walls.

The incident occurred at Tomato Cooking School, nestled inside a shophouse on River Valley Road. On the morning of the fire, the flames quickly engulfed the second and third floors of the building. According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force, the emergency was reported at 9:45 am, and it took three water jets and a 30-minute battle to bring the situation under control. Over 80 people were evacuated, and heart-wrenching visuals of terrified children being rescued have since gone viral.

The school, known for its polished branding and “life skills” curriculum, was running an Easter Cooking Camp for children aged 6 to 12. Kids were taught not just cupcakes and cookies — but food safety, kitchen etiquette, and even how to operate appliances. Each week came with a price tag of S$685 (roughly ₹43,700), which included lunch, snacks, cooking kits, and professional supervision. But in a cruel twist, 19 people were injured — 15 students and 4 adults — and tragically, one child lost their life. Among the injured is reportedly the son of actor-politician Pawan Kalyan, who is undergoing treatment.

In a place that teaches children how to handle knives and ovens with care, who was watching over the fire hazards? The tragedy at Tomato Cooking School isn’t just about a building or a curriculum — it’s a chilling reminder that no fee, no matter how high, can guarantee safety. As investigators dig for answers, parents around the world are left wondering: how safe are our children, even in the most well-marketed learning spaces?
