The position of the first lady of the United States comes with its own set of perks and advantages. A documentary based on US First Lady Melania Trump has reportedly struggled at the box office and is now moving quickly to streaming platforms after a disappointing theatrical run.

The film, titled Melania, was released in theatres on January 30, 2026. Produced by Amazon MGM Studios and directed by Brett Ratner, the documentary focuses on the 20 days leading up to the second presidential inauguration of Donald Trump.

The project had massive financial backing, with Amazon reportedly paying around 40 million dollars for the rights and spending another 35 million dollars on marketing.

Despite the heavy investment and wide release across more than 2000 theatres, the film struggled to sustain audience interest. It opened with around 7 million dollars during its first weekend but witnessed a sharp drop in ticket sales in the following weeks.

Eventually, the film collected only about 16.6 million dollars globally, far below expectations for such an expensive production.

Due to the poor theatrical performance, the makers have now shifted focus to digital platforms. The documentary is set to stream on Amazon Prime Video starting March 9, with the company hoping to recover part of its investment through online viewership and subscriptions.

The film also attracted criticism from reviewers, with several critics calling it uneventful and overly flattering toward its subject, further affecting its reception in theatres.
