Which Indian City Added More Billionaires Than NY?

It is already known that the New York City in the United States is known for producing some of the richest billionaires in the world. But there is this one particular Indian city, which has come ahead of New York and London when it comes to producing new billionaires.

Mumbai has added more new billionaires this year than both New York and London, according to the latest Hurun Global Rich List 2026 released by the Hurun Research Institute.

The report shows that Mumbai created 15 new billionaires in 2026, the highest among major global financial centres. In comparison, New York City added 14 new billionaires, while London saw 9 new additions during the same period.

The trend reflects the rapid growth of wealth creation in India, particularly in sectors such as technology, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and consumer businesses. Experts say the surge is driven by a strong startup ecosystem, expanding capital markets, and increasing global investment in Indian companies.

Despite this rise, New York continues to hold the top position globally in terms of the total number of billionaires, while cities like Shanghai and London remain among the world’s major wealth hubs.

However, the strong momentum in Mumbai indicates how quickly India’s financial capital is emerging as a major centre for global wealth creation. Analysts say the city’s growing number of entrepreneurs and large business groups is playing a key role in driving this trend.

The report also highlights India’s rising economic influence, with the country now ranking among the top nations globally in terms of billionaire population.
