Is UPI Really Going To Not Work On This Friday?

For the past few days many people have been worried about UPI payments on October 2. Social media posts about a No UPI Day have created confusion among users. Many people are now asking whether Google Pay and PhonePe will stop working across India on that day.

The good news is that UPI will not be completely shut down on October 2. The No UPI Day is linked to a protest by some trader groups. The protest is related to the proposed Merchant Discount Rate or MDR on certain UPI transactions.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has clarified that it has not announced any nationwide shutdown of UPI. Some local trader groups may still participate in the protest.

This means UPI users do not have to worry about a complete shutdown. UPI apps should continue to work as usual. However some shops may decide not to accept UPI payments as part of the protest.

The main issue is the proposed MDR charge. From October 15 2026 a 0.4 percent MDR may apply to certain merchant UPI transactions above Rs 2,000.

The proposed rule does not apply to person to person payments. UPI payments up to Rs 2,000 at merchants will also remain outside this charge.

Trader organisations are opposing the proposed fee. They say the additional cost could affect their profits. The issue has become more important as the festive shopping season approaches.

Some trader groups have therefore called for a No UPI Day on October 2. Participating shops may cover their QR codes or stop accepting UPI payments for the day.

So, there is no need to panic. UPI itself is not being switched off across the country on October 2.

Customers can still use UPI at shops that continue accepting digital payments. If a particular shop joins the protest then customers may have to use cash or another available payment option.

So the main point is simple. October 2 will not be a nationwide UPI shutdown. The No UPI Day is connected to a trader protest against the proposed MDR charge. People should therefore avoid believing social media rumours without checking official information.
