India is not only the biggest democracy in the world but also the longest-surviving democracy. The other nations in the world highly respect India for its democratic values. However, the trend has changed of late, and a few developments raised the question of where we are heading as a democracy.

After the BJP came to power at the Centre, we have been hearing a lot about the party hindering democratic values. As one such incident more than 140 MPs were suspended from the Parliament and this is said to be the biggest incident so far.

As many as 79 MPs were suspended from the Parliament in a day and the trend was followed as 49 more MPs were suspended from the house on the second day. In total, the number of MPs who were suspended from the Parliament make up to 141. This is said to be the highest so far.

The MPs who were suspended from the Parliament include Farooq Abdullah, Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor and Karti Chidambaram, NCP's Supriya Sule and Samajwadi Party's Dimple Yadav and others.

Speaker of the House has the power to suspend the members if they try to obstruct the proceedings. But the MPs were suspended from the House for questioning the Centre on the security breach that had rocked the Parliament recently.

What happened is not a small thing and can be seen as a big example of security compromise. Instead of answering the big question, the MPs were suspended from the House which is very concerning.

Questioning is part and parcel of a democracy. However, the aspect was severely hit as they were suspended from the House for raising their voice.
