Former Prince Andrew, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was arrested in the United Kingdom on Thursday over suspected misconduct in public office. The arrest comes after new details appeared in the latest Jeffrey Epstein files released by the U.S. Justice Department. These documents raised serious questions about Andrew’s actions when he served as a British trade envoy.
The arrest took place on Andrew’s 66th birthday. British police confirmed that a man in his sixties from Norfolk was taken into custody and that searches were carried out at properties in Norfolk and Berkshire. Police did not officially name him, but the details matched Andrew. He remains in police custody while the investigation continues.
The case is being handled by Thames Valley Police, which said it is examining whether Andrew shared confidential government information with convicted American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Emails released in the files suggest Andrew forwarded sensitive reports about trade visits and investment opportunities in Asia and Afghanistan to Epstein during his time as a trade official.
If Andrew is formally charged and found guilty of misconduct in public office, he could face a life sentence under British law. Legal experts say this is a very serious offense.
King Charles III, Andrew’s older brother, released a statement saying he was deeply concerned by the arrest. He said the investigation must be allowed to proceed fairly and clearly stated that the law must take its course. The royal family, he added, will continue to cooperate with authorities.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also commented on the situation, saying that no one is above the law and that the matter should be handled independently by the police.
The arrest has also brought renewed attention to past allegations made by Virginia Giuffre, who accused Andrew of sexual abuse when she was underage. Andrew denied the claims but reached a financial settlement with her in 2022. Giuffre’s family welcomed the arrest saying it showed that justice applies to everyone, including powerful figures.
