This Assembly constituency was originally vacated when Thalapathy Vijay got elected as the chief minister and decided to shift to Perambur Constituency. This naturally invited by election in Trichy constituency, and this has become a topic of discussion.

There were multiple reports that actor Raghava Lawrence could be replacing Vijay in this constituency, and he is ready to contest from the same. Interestingly, he has clarified on this matter now.
