Rajasthan BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Madan Rathore has triggered a major political controversy after his remarks about a hypothetical conflict between the United States and Pakistan went viral on social media.

Speaking at a programme in Jaipur on Thursday, October 15, Rathore reportedly said, “If a war breaks out between America and Pakistan today, we are with Pakistan because it is our neighbour.” He added that when it comes to issues between India and Pakistan, Indians stand with India. The remarks were reported by NDTV and India Today.

The statement drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders. Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed questioned whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah agreed with Rathore's position. The Aam Aadmi Party also criticised the BJP over the remarks, turning the issue into a political flashpoint.

Rathore Issues Clarification

Following the backlash, Rathore claimed that his comments had been taken out of context and misrepresented. According to his clarification, he was discussing India–Pakistan cricket matches and the reactions of people celebrating Pakistan's victory over India.

He argued that anyone celebrating India's defeat by bursting firecrackers could not be considered patriotic. He maintained that the controversial portion of his speech had been circulated without the full context.

Rathore also reiterated that the BJP's position on Pakistan remained unchanged and described relations between India and Pakistan as tense.

The controversy has raised questions about the context of political speeches and how individual remarks are interpreted and circulated on social media. While the opposition has demanded answers over his initial statement, Rathore insists that his words were distorted.
