During the Sankranti season every year, there is a lot of outgoing crowd from the Hyderabad city as the immigration population of neighbourings state of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka prefer to go back to hometowns.
In this context, something very interesting is happening now as it is being established that government of Telangana is planning to do something very considerate for the outgoing population.
In this connection, Telangana cabinet minister Komatireddy Venkatreddy has shared a very interesting transcript of his letter to union R&B minister Nitin Gadkari, asking to allow free tool movement to common public.
In the letter to Nitin Gadkari, Komatireddy wrote “As you might be aware Sankranti is a big festival in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, because of this there is a surge in traffic which starts from weekend previous to 13th Jan which is mostly unidirectional from Hyderabad to Vijayawada.
The same traffic returns after 16th Jan upto the weekend, as can be seen from toll collection data at Panthangi, Korlapahad and Chilakallu. This surge in traffic is 200% of the normal traffic. This leads to inordinate delay which has been experienced at the toll points.
In addition to above, various bottle necks due to junctions, habitations and ongoing works on the road also create traffic jams.
The State Government is coordinating the works of NHAI/NH(MoRTH) and traffic police to ensure smooth movement. In order to ensure seamless movement, it is necessary to allow free movement of vehicles from 9th to 14th from Hyderabad to Vijayawada without any collection of Toll.
Similarly the Toll free movement from Vijayawada to Hyderabad from 16th to 18th Jan may be permitted in the public interest. I therefore request you to kindly consider to allow toll free movement from Hyderabad to Vijayawada and Vijayawada to Hyderabad from 9th to 18th Jan 2026.
If this is permitted by the minister, free travel could be permitted between Hyderabad to Vijayawada during the festival season.
