Veteran Politician Sitaram Yechury Dies At 72 In AIIMS!

He was suffering from an acute respiratory tract infection which turned into a pneumonia-like condition.

Sitaram Yechury who was a leader of the Communist Party of India has passed away on Thursday. He is 72 years old and receiving treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for respiratory issues. The CPI has officially released a statement saying, “It is with profound grief that we announce the passing away of CPIM General Secretary, our beloved Comrade Sitaram Yechury, at 3.03 pm today, 12th September, at the AIIMS, New Delhi.”

They added, “We thank the doctors, nursing staff and the Director of the Institute for the excellent treatment and care extended to Comrade Yechury.” He has been in the Intensive Care Unit of AIIMS since August 19th and was kept on oxygen support while being monitored by highly qualified doctors.

He was suffering from an acute respiratory tract infection which turned into a pneumonia-like condition. The doctors claimed that he was critical yet stable on Wednesday but things turned for the worse on Thursday. A lot of politicians and fellow comrades mourned his demise.

Jairam Ramesh, who is the general secretary of Congress wrote, “Sitaram Yechury - a very fine human being, a multilingual bibliophile, an unrepentant Marxist with a pragmatic streak, a pillar of the CPM, and a superb Parliamentarian with a wonderful wit and sense of humour - is most sadly no more.”

He added, “Our association stretched over three decades, and we collaborated closely at different occasions. He had friends across the political spectrum and was admired for the strength of his convictions and for his most engaging personality.”

Sitaram’s journey into activism and politics started right when he was a studying in Jawaharlal Nehru University. He was a member of SFI and looked after the youth wing in CPI(M). He was a Rajya Sabha member from 2005 to 2017.
