The excise department is one of the biggest income sources for almost every state with big numbers. For big seasons huge numbers are recorded every year. However, only a few states are at the top when it comes to spending large amounts on liquor. Compared to other states these states see big expenditures.

As per the latest study of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), which falls under the Ministry of Finance three states are at the top in spending most of liquor namely Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab.

The average annual per capita consumption expenditure is Rs 1,623 in Telangana while it is Rs 1306 in Andhra Pradesh followed by 1245 in Punjab. Two states stood at the top two places in the expenditure.

The report was prepared using the data of NSSO's 2011-12 Household Consumption Expenditure survey and CMIE's Consumer Pyramids Household Survey (SPHS). Taking the data from the reports the report is prepared.

As per the NSSO’s data, Andhra Pradesh is the in the highest average annual per capita consumption expenditure on alcohol with Rs 620 while the SPHS data says Telangana is at the top.

The report was prepared to know the revenues that are mobilised from the taxes on Alcohol. While a few states are spending huge amounts, some states see fewer numbers. Irrespective of the state liquor sales are the third highest revenue forms.

There are different tax systems in different states. In some states, there are high taxes. Overall Goa earns the highest income from liquor sales a massive 722 percent.
