These days, it is becoming increasingly common for the Indian youth to indulge in live in relationships. This is particularly prevalent in the urban pockets of the countries, including the metropolitan cities.

Now the Supreme Court has passed a pretty sensational order regarding the legality of the live in relationship aspect. The Supreme Court has ruled that people in live-in relationships can also seek protection under IPC Section 498A. This is essentially domestic violence application in cases of alleged cruelty by their partner or the partner's family.

Under Section 498A, those found guilty may face up to 3 years in jail, along with a fine. The ruling is being seen as a significant legal recognition of the rights of individuals in live-in relationships which can be similar to marriage in nature.

All the well, there was no legal jurisdiction on live in relationships but the Supreme Court has come to action now, and the consequences for domestic violence could be pretty significant even in live in setups.

Considering the fact that a large portion of the youth in the country has been following this formula and so is the millennial population as well. This is a strong corrective instruction for men and women out there who practice domestic violence, thinking it would not apply in the case of live in relationship relationships.
