It is an established precedent that Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are two of the highest liquor consuming states in India. And now let us have a look at the volume of numbers associated with the same.
The latest Per Capita IMFL Comparison for FY 2024 to 2025 shows interesting trends, especially for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Telangana stands out with 3.71 crore liquor cases sold for a population of 3.9 crore. This comes to 0.95 cases per person, which is one of the highest figures among large states. It is second only to Karnataka, which recorded 1.01 cases per person with 6.88 crore cases sold.
Andhra Pradesh also shows strong numbers. The state sold 3.55 crore cases for a population of 4.9 crore, resulting in 0.72 cases per person. While this is lower than Telangana, it is still higher than the national average of 0.28 cases per person. This shows that both Telugu states are well above the national average in per capita liquor consumption.
Compared to them, Tamil Nadu reported 0.83 cases per person, and Kerala recorded 0.64. Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh are much lower at 0.22 and 0.10 respectively, despite having large populations.
Interestingly, Chandigarh has the highest figure overall at 1.39 cases per person, but it is a small Union Territory with a limited population.
Overall, Telangana ranks among the top consuming states, while Andhra Pradesh also maintains a significantly high position compared to many other major states in India.
