Telangana High Court is one of the highest judicial bodies in all of India. And now this High Court has had a very interesting judgement on the current scenario of relationships in this generation.

The Telangana High Court has clarified an important legal point on modern relationships, ruling that a failed romantic relationship even one that involved a promise to marry cannot automatically be treated as a criminal offence like cheating unless there is clear proof of dishonest intent right from the beginning.

In a case that came before the court, a man was accused of cheating after a relationship that lasted about five years ended without marriage. The complainant alleged he had promised to marry her and then backed out, leading to criminal charges.

However, the High Court while quashing the criminal proceedings held that simply breaking a promise to marry does not, by itself, satisfy the legal elements of cheating under the Indian Penal Code.

The judge emphasised that for a charge of cheating to stand, there must be evidence that the person never intended to marry from the outset and acted fraudulently from the beginning.

This ruling reflects the court’s acknowledgment that personal relationships today often evolve outside traditional frameworks, and that not every broken promise should result in criminal prosecution. Unless initial fraudulent intent is demonstrated clearly, the law will not treat a failed relationship as a crime.
