The Donald Trump administration in the United States is going berserk about the prevailing immigration policies and related activities.

The Trump administration has increased surprise site visits for students in the United States who are on OPT (Optional Practical Training). These visits are mainly for students on the STEM OPT extension. Almost one lakh Indian students are currently in OPT training, so many of them may face these checks.

The U.S. immigration officers from the Fraud Detection and National Security (FDNS) unit are carrying out these visits. Their goal is to confirm that the student’s training really matches their degree, as written in Form I-983, and that the student is maintaining legal F-1 status.

Officers may arrive without notice at offices or even at homes if they are listed as training sites. During visits, they can ask about work duties, salary, and how the job is related to the student’s studies.

Immigration lawyers say that site visits are legally allowed, but the number of checks has gone up a lot recently. Some lawyers argue that visits to homes may not be fully legal unless the home is clearly listed as a workplace.

Experts are advising students and employers to stay careful. Records should be updated regularly, and all information must be consistent on forms. Students should also be prepared to explain how their job connects to their degree.
