The United States administration led by Donald Trump has started to make some of the most shocking decisions and they’re now going after Greenland in this context. The idea of the United States buying another country has once again entered public discussion after reports suggested that former US President Donald Trump is showing renewed interest in acquiring Greenland.
According to estimates being circulated, the notional cost of such a move is being pegged at nearly $700 billion, which converts to roughly ₹60 lakh crore in Indian currency.Greenland is not a small territory. It spans over 2.16 million square kilometres, making it the world’s largest island, with a population of just around 56,000 people.
Though it enjoys self rule, Greenland officially remains an autonomous territory under the Kingdom of Denmark. Any transfer of control would require approval from both Denmark and Greenland’s local government. The strategic value of Greenland is immense. It sits in the Arctic region, rich in rare earth minerals, oil reserves and untapped natural resources. The US already maintains a military presence there through the Thule Air Base, highlighting its geopolitical importance.
However, Danish authorities have earlier made it clear that Greenland is not for sale at any price. Political experts say the ₹58 lakh crore figure is purely speculative and not based on any official negotiations. As of now, there is no legal or diplomatic process underway to make such a deal a reality.
