Public Firing On UPI Fee, But Will Govt Go Back Now?
In this regard, the latest developments are suggesting that a Supreme Court case has been filed against this MDR fee imposed by the Finance ministry on UPI transactions.
The government of India has taken a big decision by imposing UPI transaction fee. Though this decision is only going to affect the merchants and transacting companies, the common public is suspecting that the merchants would be imposing this fees on them very soon.
In this regard, the latest developments are suggesting that a Supreme Court case has been filed against this MDR fee imposed by the Finance ministry on UPI transactions.
A Supreme Court plea has been filed by Advocate Anjan Datta seeking to quash the Union Ministry of Finance's recent notifications that permit merchant charges on commercial UPI Transactions above ₹2,000.
The petitioner is seeking quashing of Gazette notifications issued by the Union Ministry of Finance on September 14 and 15 that announced charges on commercial UPI transactions above ₹2000.
The plea has been filed by Advocate Anjan Datta on the ground that the newly announced charges would ultimately affect the common citizen. This is very much in tune with the public feedback after the imposition of this fee by the ministry of finance.
The plea has been filed against the Union government, the RBI, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI. The Supreme Court is expected to hear this case shortly but the actual verdict is yet to be established.
Only time will tell if the government of India and the finance ministry would be considerate enough to go back on this decision. But it must also be kept in mind that the government had clarified earlier today that there is no intention of going back on the UPI fee.
