Donald Trump did something interesting with regard to hiring his team of officers this time as he roped in several Indians for crucial positions in the system. This has now backfired badly as an Indian origin individual has created a panic situation.
The head of the United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency CISA is facing scrutiny after reports revealed that Indian origin Madhu Gottumukkala, the agency’s acting director, uploaded sensitive government contracting documents into a public version of ChatGPT, triggering an internal security review by the Department of Homeland Security DHS.
According to reports, the documents were not classified but were marked “For Official Use Only”, meaning they were restricted to internal government systems and not meant to be shared on public platforms.
The uploads reportedly took place last year and were flagged by automated monitoring tools designed to detect potential data leaks. Following these alerts, DHS initiated a review to assess whether the incident posed any broader security risks.
What has raised eyebrows is that most DHS employees are prohibited from using public AI tools like ChatGPT due to cybersecurity concerns. Gottumukkala, however, had been granted a limited exception, which officials say was intended for short term and controlled use. Even so, cybersecurity experts argue that entering sensitive material into public AI systems can expose government data to unintended access or long term retention risks.
The incident has reignited debate around AI usage within government agencies, particularly ironic given CISA’s core responsibility of safeguarding federal networks and critical infrastructure. While no confirmed damage has been disclosed so far, the episode highlights growing challenges in balancing innovation with security in the age of artificial intelligence.
