Over the years, the working community in the United States had the privilege of having their work permit renewed automatically by the authorities. But that is not going to be the case anymore, and here is looking into the story.

The United States Department of Homeland Security announced a major policy change ending the automatic renewal of work permits for non-citizens starting October 30, 2025.

Until now, immigrants who applied for the renewal of their Employment Authorization Document before expiration were automatically given an extension of up to 540 days, allowing them to continue working legally while waiting for approval.

Under the new rule, applicants will no longer receive this automatic extension. They must wait for their renewed EAD to be approved before resuming work. This decision is expected to impact thousands of legal immigrants, including a large number of Indian H-1B visa holders’ spouses who rely on EADs for employment.

Certain exceptions will still apply, especially for individuals under Temporary Protected Status or specific legal categories. Immigration experts have urged affected workers to plan renewals well in advance to avoid employment gaps when the new rule takes effect.

It is evident that President Donald Trump is doing everything in his power to destabilise the immigration and working population in the United States.
