If a work permit visa holder a job in the United States, they will have to immediately leave the country as they will have no buffer period.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is scheduled to publish a notice of proposed rule making on September 11, 2026, that would eliminate the grace period of up to 60 days currently available to certain nonimmigrant workers following the end of employment.

The proposed rule, Eliminating the Discretionary 60-day Grace Period, would affect workers in E-1, E-2, E-3, H1B, H1B1, L-1, O-1, and TN status, as well as their dependent family members.

Without this buffer period, the visa holder will have to immediately leave the United States and there will be no time to even look for an alternative. This is going to be a huge shock to the working population in the United States, especially in this constrained job market.
